Let me tell you why most of the time hardworking homeowners end up paying more for the same result. As an example I tell you a story about an elderly lady who had called a General Contractor to get an estimate on some work to be done in the home.
The work to be performed was to install a new basement door and paint the wall around that area the estimate she got was for approximately $1600.00 plus materials, plus taxes and the General Contractor made it clear that it was a bargain because he doesn"t take small jobs like the one she needed, therefore the lady accepted the proposal and got the job done.
Let analyze what happen there: The contractor hire a handyman to do the door installation and to paint the area for which he paid the handyman $690.00 to have the job done, and he pocketed the difference as pure 100% profit, now don"t get me wrong that"s the reason we are in business.
The only thing the contractor did is hire the handyman, something the you can do as well as the contractor did, the only difference will be the you had save in your pocket the $910.00.
The contractor left that house with CAN$ 910 because HE CALL a painter and a carpenter....YES, he got CAN$ 910 in hes pocket just for a phone call!!
Similar situation happens in London, Scarborough, Toronto and all over Ontario and I'm sure you know a few people that had this experience.
Let's be clear that not all General Contractor are the same, but be aware that most of them rely on handymen like me to do that work, in the scenario mentioned above the total cost if I did the job most likely would be around $570 to $600 with a significant saving for the homeowner almost between $1000.00 to $1030.00 dollars.
Obviously, here comes my recommendation...If the job its not too big....Hire a Handyman!! You will have the the same quality work for lowest price. I (personaly) did a similar job as a Handyman for CAN$570 Taxes included! The saving in the similar job was CAN$ 1030!! You know why I was able to do that?
That's because:
1) I did not pay commissions or referals. (Paintes, Electrician, Plumers etc. give commissions to the GC in order to be called again).
2) I did both jobs, door instlation and paint. (NO 3rd person to get "commissions" and NO Double transportation of tools).
3) Because I believe in fair price that is affordable without cutting corners to have the best value for your money.
